Hats Off to Hamilton Performers

I am Phyllis Wheatley…I am Benjamin Banneker…Being black and free in my era, I was expected to fail, but failure wasn’t part of my future…” These are the opening lines from “What Do I Know” a Hamilton-inspired piece written and performed by Central Visual and Performing Arts students Promise Mitchell, LaShonda Givens, and Kevon Chambers at the Fox Theatre in April 2018.  With thanks to SLPS Foundation donors, SLPS was able to send 500 high school students to engage in a special matinee performance of Hamilton at the Fox Theatre. The SLPS Foundation partnered with the Gilder Lehrman Institute which provided area high schools with a curriculum that focused on the founding era.  Students did original research and developed their own creative pieces to earn their seats to the award-winning musical, Hamilton, at the Fox Theatre. In addition, the Gilder Lehrman Institute chose the top student pieces to be performed on stage, including the ensemble from Central VPA and Orykia Warren from Clyde C. Miller Career Academy.
