Senior year reimagined: The Learn and Earn Program
Saint Louis Public Schools and STL Youth Jobs just launched the Learn and Earn Internship program. SLPS, in partnership with STL Youth Jobs and the SLPS Foundation, has set a goal of securing 600 paid student internships for Spring 2022. This launch represents a $1.5 million investment in career readiness for SLPS seniors, offering each participating students the opportunity to earn nearly $3,000 while also earning their diploma. Through their paid internship, qualified seniors will gain transferable job skills, earn a paycheck, explore careers, and prepare for long-term employment and their post-high school education plan.
Research shows that intern students have the opportunity to gain a competitive advantage, get into better colleges and eventually get higher paying full time employment. Employers who host interns get to develop students early in their career while ensuring the well-being of the local community by supporting local high schools. We are proud to support the newly launched program which will “create meaningful and flexible job opportunities so that our seniors are graduating with both a diploma and a resume in hand.” – Dr. Kelvin Adams, Superintendent of SLPS
In the first 7 weeks of school, 360 seniors have already started the registration process. There are still over 200 student internship positions and 100 job site openings needing to be filled.
